My Better Angels

Sitting in the car at Garrison station high on the L.S.D. we had taken an hour before waiting for the train to New York City – Must be somewhere between Beacon and Cold Spring by now

Its cold so we wait while the December wind whips the windows

We sit with our breath and you trace snowflakes on the glass canvas with your finger tips cutting the condensation

A milk white moon bathes in holy water as we chain smoke camel cigarettes while the stars cast their diamond hearts on this Hudson town mirroring the sky hallucinating greatness.

Under illusory shadows across the great white earthen snow the train arrives

We board – sit between the old men returning home with french horns and the intimidating Poughkeepsie skinheads.

We buy our tickets on the train and wait staring out the western window watching the snake like river pass under the bridge, and in time the conductor bellows Peekskill, Tarrytown, Croton Harmon, 125th Street–

A strychnine envenomed night wide eyed to the poetry of train horns fluorescent flicker and the clack of the tracks beneath our feet to soon raving mad symphony of Grand Central Station where we arrive an hour later to drum of the beat of the city’s heart beat beating one trillion miles an hour to the rush of 8 million souls all bleating under the constellations of night like goats herded home to supper to husband sister brother night or lover’s arms or to an empty bed

I see you enraptured by new york city 1993 in an ecstasy of snowflakes falling on bare warm flesh sizzling unbound by the limitations of your creation – with huge bejeweled pupils you touch my face with both hands and declare my mortality and I realize in that very moment that I am dust and you are dust and we are set free into the material night to glow

too high earth bound angels attempting God outside the margins of this racing machine towards the edge of time and space in our astronaut meat suits

We run from the train out of habit not wanting to miss another moment of this

We run up the steps and swing the doors wide wooooosh and into the forever Gotham night we go–
